Decided to revisit an old concept that didn't work out, and submit it for this contest. Made it just in the nick of time!
When I considered the theme 'Change Your World', I thought of two things: reading and drawing. These two things change my world on a daily basis: not the actual world itself, but my own personal world. Reading makes me see the world around me in a new, inspired why; drawing lets me project that vision back onto the physical world, through the art that I create.
I combined this interpretation of the theme with an idea first explored by Australian artist Shaun Tan, who drew a short comic called 'Create Your Own Pet'. My version is 'Draw Your Own Pet', because the world could always use another furry/finned/feathered friend or two. Drawing this concept by hand frees me to create animals - like winged dogs - that don't exist in the real, mundane world; suddenly, an ordinary pile of books becomes a 'portal' through which these fantastical beasts leap into the real world.
The animals were drawn in pencil, coloured digitally, then superimposed onto photos of books that I took. Each component - drawings (including both lines and colours), books, pencil, eraser, sharpener, paper, background 'table-top' - is a separate item; everything had to be carefully edited and stitched together.
